On 20 March 2026, the online seminar “Civil Society and the Fight against Transnational Organised Crime” was held, organized by the CROSS Observatory of the University of Milan in collaboration with the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention & Criminal Justice. The event, part of the educational activities of the postgraduate programme and the PhD programme dedicated to the study of organized crime, explored the increasingly central role of civil society in countering transnational organised crime.
The first part of the seminar outlined the main opportunities for the engagement of civil society organizations within international institutional contexts, with particular reference to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). The second part presented examples of regional initiatives and local projects developed in various countries, highlighting how grassroots actions can contribute to the implementation and monitoring of public policies.
The event underscored the need to strengthen civil society participation, ensure sustainable working environments, and promote continuous dialogue among institutions, academia, and social actors. The seminar confirmed the role of Academia as a forum capable of connecting diverse perspectives and fostering a shared reflection on future challenges.
